With several job classes in-game to utilize in Final Fantasy Tactics, there's lots of ways to customize standard units, so let's look at some really good ones. Note that I stated 'standard' in the title because we're not including special job classes that special recruits have. So don't expect Holy Swordsman, Holy Knight, Divine Knight, or Dragoner here. We're looking at the normal classes in this game.Ninjas have been one of my favorite classes throughout every Final Fantasy game, and Tactics isn't an exception to the rule. Able to duel wield and throw plus great speed is everything a ninja can do. They also have a Vanish reaction ability which is really handy. - NuMetalManiak
These units have access to the same Job classes the generics do, with the exception of Squire, which is replaced by a Job with different action abilities. Special unit Jobs still retain the same reaction, support and move abilities the Squire has. Final Fantasy Tactics has few ways to mitigate damage, so durability is almost entirely.
2SummonerTo think that the Summoner would be an amazing job class, but it is. Trust me. In Tactics, spells can usually hit both friend and foe alike, which is why it's important to strategize when they charge. Summoners however avoid friendly fire (or enemy fire in the case of healing summons) and hit wide areas. Too bad they are somewhat slow and require loads of job points to get the best of summons. - NuMetalManiak
3SamuraiThe thing that makes the Samurai class amazing is their Draw Out technique. As long as you have the specified katana, you can use it to hit enemies instantly, with the only real cost being the chance to break the katana. And like the summoner, the Draw Out abilities distinguish friend and foe, so you don't need to worry about hitting allies. - NuMetalManiak
4ChemistDespite being a starting job, the Chemist might actually be the better choice of healer, as they can throw items to units who need them and they don't need charge times at all. They can also equip guns, which I love using in Tactics due to their great range. Also I consider their Maintenance passive ability to be invaluable in many battles where its possible to lose equipment. - NuMetalManiak
5CalculatorAlso known as Arithmetician, the Calculator job may actually be the single hardest one to effectively use, but its usage when done right can break the game open. Set a parameter (experience, level, height), and a number (4, 5, prime number), then a learned spell from the repetoire and bam, instant casting. Unfortunately, it doesn't distinguish friend or foe, can't be used for summon spells, and to top it off, the calculator is the slowest job in the entire game. Very hard to use but fun if used right. - NuMetalManiak
6GeomancerTo think that the usually situational Geomancer would actually be pretty decent. Having Elemental is a pretty good skill to have in most cases, as long as you're using terrain right, you can damage from afar and cause statuses. Plus they can equip axes, which is really nice. Attack UP is a good passive ability to have for fighting classes later on. - NuMetalManiak
7PriestThe obvious White Mage, they are usually indispensible and have all the good white magic. Save up job points for Holy so you get the best spell. - NuMetalManiakAnnotated bibliography examples mla.
8WizardThe obvious Black Mage, with all the offensive magic but very squishy. Good magic score ensures that this unit can dish out some good damage provided with the best spells available. - NuMetalManiak
9Time MageTime mages can be hard to use due to them being extremely squishy and not having a whole lot of really offensive magic. They do have the Demi line and if you train enough, you get Meteor. Also the Short Charge ability is fantastic. - NuMetalManiak
10MediatorI didn't think of the Mediator as good, as I never used the Talk Skill, but if you want the monsters in your party, the Mediator can invite them over to become allies. They also have several other abilities, some cause statuses and others take money or something. More importantly, a Mediator can equip guns. Getting enough job points to get Equip Gun so other classes can use it is one of the things I aimed for when I played FFT. - NuMetalManiak
Final Fantasy Tactics
Job Class System
Final Fantasy Tactics brought back the Job system featured in III and V. This time though, they took it, and completely remade the entire system. Instead of finding a crystal, and getting a set of the jobs, you almost have to earn them.
What this means is, in order to get new jobs, you have to meet certain requirements of other jobs first. For instance, in order to get the job for a Black Mage, you need to get the Chemist job up to Level 2. If you want to be a Summoner, you need the Level 2 or higher for the Chemist, then you need the Level 3 for a Black Mage to become a Time Mage. And finally you need to level the Time Mage up to Level 3, in order to become a Summoner.
This might sound very complicated, but it is in fact quite easy. Basically to get certain Jobs, you need to have other jobs at a certain level.
The other thing to laern about is the JP (Job Point) aquisition. This happens after a character performs an action. Say Ramza casts a spell successfully. To find out the JP gotten, use this equation:
8 + ([Current Job Level x2]+[Character's current level÷4]) = JP obtained.
To start, you must do what is in the ( ) first. Let's begin with the Job Level. If the JL of the character is say 6, then multiply that by 2. 6 x 2 = 12. Now we need to determine the level of the character. Say the character's level is 28. 28 ÷ 4 = 7. Now add 12 + 7 = 19. Now we take this total, and do what is outside of the ( ). 19 + 8 = 27. This character will get 27 JP.
The other new function is the JP distribution. This is a great tool, that should have been introduced a long time ago. If say you have a White Mage on the field, and they get 40JP. 10JP of the 40 is then given to the White Mage class of every other unit member on the field. Even if they cannot or are not using the White Mage Job. Basically you are getting free JP for various jobs. If you want to focus on a certain job, and advance it rather quickly, there is a way to do that as well.
1 - All unit members need to know the Squire's 'Focus' ability. This ability is a garonteed JP earner.
2 - Have every unit member change into the desired job. We'll go with the Squire.
3 - Kill off all but one enemy in the field, and hit that one with Toad, Stop, or Slow.
5 - Now spread your unit out across the field, and continue using Focus. Everytime JP is earned by a player, 25% will go to the other team. Being that it is a Squire's ability, it will go to that class, and you will master it in no time. This can be done with any class there is. If all members are Summoners, you will inevitably get more JP for that class. This though can be very risky to do with the weaker magick user classes. Do it at your own risk.
In this section, you will find all the classes of Final Fantasy Tactics. Though the tables are easy to read, they might not be easy to understand. here is what it looks like, and what everything means:
